01-30-09 Sinking Ship

Steeped in history the "sinking ship" parking garage at the corner of James and Yessler replaces the old Hotel Seattle which was build to replace the Occidental Hotel that burnt to the ground in the Seattle fire in June of 1889

01-29-09 Sandstone Arch

Built in 1890 the 6 story Romanesque-style Burke Building designed by Elmer Fisher was a considered a "terra cotta extravaganza". As Seattle grew the need for newer taller buildings brought about the ultimate destruction of the Burke building but thanks to the persistence of architect Fred Bassetti who was able to convince the GSA (US General Services Administration) there remains today a handful of architectural fragments including this sandstone arch which was the original entrance. Facing 2nd Ave it now serves as a portal to the plaza of the Henry M Jackson Federal building, a popular destination for political marches and rallies.

01-27-09 Nevermore

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting -
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

(excerpt: next to last stanza of THE RAVEN by POE)

01-26-09 Koi Pond

Nestled amoung the trees and bushes in Volunteer Park with the Water Tower in the background, you'll find this lovely little cement pond, home to a half dozen or so Koi fish.

01-21-09 Brass Urn

Standing five feet tall a pair of brass urns salvaged from the 1909 Alaska-Yukon Exposition grace the front entrance to the Federal Office Building in downtown Seattle.

01-24-08 Urban Art

So this one night I am taking the back road home for whatever reason and as I'm going under the freeway, I see this tree illuminated by big blue spot lights. I don't get a real good look at it though because its down in a ravine and I'm driving but I decide to investigate sometime. Well thursday I made it a point to do just that. When I got out of my car to have a look about I couldn't believe my eyes. There is a large rather complex system of mountain bike practice trails and a park complete with fancy lit up palm tree, all part of a project called the I-5 Colonnade What a fabulous way to use otherwise wasted space. Way to go Seattle!!!

01-23-09 Freezing Fog

Wiki definition: Freezing fog occurs when liquid fog droplets freeze to surfaces, forming white rime ice.

This tree right outside my living room window was laden with white rime ice a couple mornings ago.

01-22-09 Maryhill Museum

Just south of Goldendale, WA on a hill above the Columbia River rests this stately mansion turned museum. Dedicated in 1926 by Queen Marie of Romania “Sometimes the things dreamers do seem incomprehensible to others, and the world wonders why dreamers do not see the way others do”, the museum is home to many ongoing exhibits including Auguste Rodin, Native American artifacts and an impressive collection of chess sets. The 2009 season will include the works of Ansel Adams from July 18 to September 13. A destination not to be missed should you decide to visit the Colubia Gorge.

01-21-09 Old Man

OM: "HAH!!!! You think you're the only one with a camera Missy?"

BN: "No sir. I see that's a mighty fine camera you have there."

OM: "Oh c'mon little lady, I've had a camera in my watch since way before all these digital ones came out, can put the picture right on my computer!!!"

He shows me the "spy" watch on his wrist.

BN: "Oh my, isn't that just too cool for words?"

OM: "Oh pfft, I have all kinds of gadgets you never heard of."

BN: "Well aren't you full of surprises?"

OM: "You never know what you're gonna find on me!!" he says with a wicked little twinkle in his eyes.

BN: "Would you like me to look about and see what I can find?"

Another poor soul wanders off into the throngs of passersby with a startled look on his face as he wonders if I was really serious. No, of course I couldn't let him beat me at my own game.

True story!

01-20-09 Inauguration Day

A new day dawns as we open the door to the future and give birth to a new era in American history, leaving the shadow of the past behind us. GO AMERICA!!!!

01-19-09 Peace Now (stop the genocide)

Seattle is a great place for rallies. This one (taken on 04-30-06) was protesting the genocide in Darfur. Today we will be having another one in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is my firm opinion that everyone should participate in a rally supporting a cause they believe in at least once in their life.

South View

01-18-09 Ladies Lounge

The window in the east view is the left most window from the Trinity image I posted last month. The building is the Mausoleum at Acaia Cemetery in North Seattle. It is absolutely gorgeous inside and out. Worth a trip for anyone with an appreciation for this type of architecture.

01-17-09 Morning Jog

Still dark and foggy out this morning. 33 degrees here. Warm compared to Chicago, and just right for a morning jog. I think I'll go make me some coffee.

01-16-09 L'AMOURITA

This lovely building can be seen from the southend of the ship canal bridge as you're driving into downtown Seattle from the northend. You can only see the top of it though so in case you ever wondered what the rest of it looks like, here it is.

01-15-09 Forest Dweller

I came across this fella while hiking through the Evergreen Forest.

01-14-09 SFD

The FALLEN FIREFIGHTER'S MEMORIAL in Occidental Park was created by University of Washington graduate Hai Ying Wu, to pay homage those that have died in the line of duty. 34 Seattle firefighters have their names on the granite slabs immortalizing their heroism.

01-12-09 Lattice

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping something louder than before.
'Surely,' said I, 'surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore
Let my heart be still a moment, and this mystery explore;
'Tis the wind and nothing more."

01-10-09 Corson Building

The Corson Building is located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle just off I-5 at the Michigan St exit. There is a lovely wrought iron fence surrounding this quaint turn of the century building with a fountain in the courtyard featuring a Venus statuette holding a conch shell. I had driven by on many occasions fully intending to stop one day and have a closer look. My big chance came when it went up for rent and they were having an open house. Woo hoo I got to go inside and have a look about. By all appearences it seemed to have been inhabited by an artist of the science fiction persuasion, its rooms cluttered with fantastical paintings and such. It is now home to the Corson Building Restaurant which opened on June 07 2008, with tickets auctioned off at $600 a pop and celeb chef Anthony Bourdain in attendance.

01-09-09 Highway 99 Blues Club

If you like the blues, we got the club. Highway 99 Blues Cub Never been there myself. In fact I had never even heard of it until I got an email from Duffy Bishop last month. She was gonna be there on the 19th and whenever Duffy comes to town I go see her. Unfortunately the show was cancelled due to weather but now that I am aware of this venue I shall have to go check it out. Anyone wanna go with?

01-08-09 Urban Diety

This little lady lives in Occidental Park. With arms open she stands ready to greet all visitors.

01-07-09 Dexter Horton

The whole building.

01-04-09 Dexter Horton Building

Little known Bunfact: Sometime ago, maybe about 15 years or so before I entered the healthcare industry, I worked in the electronics field. For awhile I worked for a Portland based company out of their Seattle office installing fiber optic cable in many downtown Seattle buildings. This was one of my favorites. There is a lot of early Seattle history in the walls of this magnificent building. Dexter Horton the man was a true pioneer.

01-03-09 Underworld

Descend into DeNunzio's on Cherry St. where it's easy to imagine shady deals being brokered in a secluded corner of this ultra-dim, rather kitschy subterranean restaurant. I've read that the food is excellent.

Is that gum?
Damn, it sure is!!!Who comes up with this stuff anyway? (scratches head)

01-02-09 Gum Wall

Ok so I've lived in Seattle for a good 85% of my life and never had I heard of the "Gum Wall" before until a couple weeks ago when a coworker from California mentioned it to me. Gum Wall? What you talking about missy? Well I went in search of and sure enough, I found it. This one's for you Kim. Thanks for the tip.
